ENBREL Drug Effective For Active Early Rheumatoid Arthritis

juvenile-rheumatoid-arthritis: Early Rheumatoid Arthritis According to research presented at the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Scientific Meeting, held in Boston, Massachusetts, the drug ENBREL is effective against active early rheumatoid arthritis

Enbrel is manufactured by Amgen and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth. The study was made at various centers worldwide. The study showed a 50% clinical remission (within one year) for participants with active early rheumatoid arthritis. The 50% clinical remission was achieved when Embrel was tested in conjunction with methotrexate. Methotrexate alone only caused a 28% clinical remission.

The clinical efficacy and safety of ENBREL and methotrexate combination therapy and methotrexate alone in patients with active early rheumatoid arthritis was the main goal of this study

This is the first big clinical trial study for Enbrel. Participants in this study had the active early rheumatoid arthritis disease for less than two years.

Patients were assigned randomly to receive either ENBREL plus methotrexate or methotrexate alone. Two hundred and sixty eight patients received methotrexate alone while 274 received the combination therapy (ENBREL plus methotrexate).

What is known DAS28 clinical remission was the main criteria for ending the study. DA28 is a score used to assess the clinical condition in patients with active early rheumatoid arthritis

The data presented at ACR is from the first 12-month period (52 weeks). A second 12-month period test is currently ongoing to test Enbrel.

Regarding safety of the drug there were no differences in rates of serious adverse effects among patients in the ENBREL plus methotrexate group compared with the methotrexate-only group. No cases of TB, infections, malignancies were reported in the first year study. The most common events were injection site reaction, infection, and headache.

According to the manufacturer ENBREL is a human soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor. ENBREL was first approved in 1998 and has since been used in more than 460, 000 patients worldwide. People with an immune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and psoriasis, have too much TNF in their bodies. ENBREL can restore TNF's levels in the body to normal levels, helping to treat autoimmune diseases.

Enbrel has been used in a variety of condition including:

* treatment of active polyarticular-course juvenile rheumatoid.

* treatment of joint damage from getting worse, and improving physical function in patients with psoriatic arthritis.

* in patients with active ankylosing spondylitis.

* the treatment of adult patients (18 years or older) with chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis

It is estimated that more than 2 million Americans suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA can cause stiffness, swelling, and limitation in the motion and function of multiple joints.
