Belly Dance To Ease Arthritis Pain
It can be quite frustrating being told to exercise to ease arthritis pain by a well-meaning rheumatologist. Most patients with arthritis feel that it's a good day just to be able to get out of bed and go about living somewhat of a normal life. Trying to work all day with limited mobility, doing the necessary chores such as grocery shopping, cooking, vacuuming and showering, can all be a challenge when joints no longer move the way they did in our youth. So, when the doctor tells us we need to exercise more, what is one to do? There is a fun and safe exercise that will increase range of motion, strengthen muscles and provide an aerobic workout all at the same time. Belly dancing!
The music is fun and exotic and the costumes are sexy and colorful. It can be done standing in one position or with as much as much or little movement as the arthritis will allow. Using a silk veil for the veil work will work the upper arms; the biceps, triceps and forearms will all reap the benefits of the flowing veil work. Using the zills (finger cymbals), can help work the muscles in the hand, without having to hold onto anything. They fit onto the fingers with a stretch band. The gentle arm extensions flex the arms and the flowing movement works the upper back, the laterals and the lower back-all essential factors in arthritis exercise. Working the lower body in the basic belly dancing movements will firm and tone the butt muscles (commonly called the glutes). They are called the glutes because we have more than one muscle that works this rather significant area of our body. There is the gluteus maximus, which is the largest muscle and the one we most refer to in terms of the butt muscle; the gluteus medius, which is near the hip and keeps the pelvic upright when walking; and the gluteus minimus, which works with the medius. Hip rotation involves this entire muscle group. Even standing in one position or gentle leg movement will work the quadriceps. Once again this is a group of three different muscles, although they are generally referred to as the quads. This is the large muscle attached to the front of the tibia. This muscle group is responsible for straightening the knee. Using a bell ankle chain promotes movements of the calf and ankle providing the stretching necessary to elongate the two tendons that connect the leg to the foot. Working these muscles is important, especially if there is decreased mobility due to arthritis pain. An added benefit of belly dancing is the rhythms and the drums associated with the most common belly dance music. The rhythmic sound of drumming is proven to increase endorphins, which can decrease pain and elevate moods. According to Dr. Barry Quinn, a licensed clinical psychologist, drumming increases our alpha brainwaves, which are those brainwaves associated with feelings of well-being and euphoria. Shopping can also be not only an enjoyable, but a stress-reducing, activity. Shopping for all the beautiful belly dancing outfits can be a therapy in itself. Many beginning belly-dance are readily available on line and can even be found free on various websites. Arthritis exercise can be fun; so, dance-dance-dance your way to a healthier and happier life!
