Exercise:

It may sound silly to speak about exercise, when a person is experiencing pain. Yet, if a person can actually make themselves move and exercise, they may actually find some relief from their Osteoarthritis Symptoms.

Shedding of any extra weight

Extra weight means extra pressure. If you can remove some of the extra pressure off of the joints, you will feel better and feel less pain.

The use of hot or cold therapy (or both)

Heat can relax muscles and stiff joints. This can reduce discomfort. Cold can reduce swelling. You might want to try applying a heating pad for 15 minutes several times a day. You can also use an ice occasionally, too, as long as you do not have circulation problems.

Over the counter pain relievers

Doctors prefer acetaminophen for pain. Studies have shown that it is as effective as aspirin and ibuprofen and will not cause stomach problems.

Prescription strength medications

If you pain is severe, you may need to speak to your doctor about prescribing something stronger.

Corticosteroid shots

Some people have found relief by having corticosteroid shots injected right into the infected joint with the use of anesthetic. This is only used as a last resort before surgery. Alternative treatments

How long does it take to get osteoarthritis?
I am only 23 but I have had a knee injury since a year ago off and on and now I am experiencing osteoarthritis symptoms. (stiffness in the knee joint in the morning followed by pain of and on during the day) Could these symptoms be caused by something else or do I have arthritis already?
